Summary
Suzanne Simonin is forced by her parents to enter a convent at the age of 16. Traumatised
by the harassment she receives from her Mother Superior, she starts to rebel and is transferred
to another convent. Here, things are not much better and she finds herself the object
of desire of another Mother Superior, a closet lesbian...
Review
Jacques Rivette’s controversial adaptation of Diderot’s 18th century novel created a stir
even before it was released. With the intervention of the Catholic Church, the film
was banned by the French government for two years and further sanctioned when it was finally
released. The furore served only to raise Rivette’s profile and establish him as
one of the standard bearers of the Nouvelle Vague. The film features Anna Karina
in what many consider to be her finest screen role.
