Summary
Edouard is a headstrong pianist who is married to Caroline, a young woman of bourgeois
origins, whose relatives believe she has married beneath her. Caroline’s pompous
uncle invites the couple to an evening party at which Edouard must play the piano.
Before they set out, Edouard and Caroline start to quarrel...
Review
Although pretty lightweight compared with some of Jacques Becker’s other films (particularly
Casque d’Or which immidately
followed it), Édouard et Caroline is a pleasing comedy of manners which
follows the ups and downs of a newly married couple. As in his earlier, similar,
film, Antoine et Antoinette
, Becker observes married life with tenderness and a canny perceptiveness.
